“The pest treatment you gave my house was the most thorough treatment I’ve ever had. I have used other pest control companies in the past and they don’t even come close to the service that you provided” Rocco Proia, Casula
Casula
Casula is one of the suburbs around Sydney. It is located 35 kilometres south west of the Sydney Central Business District. It belongs to the state of New South Wales, Australia and under the local government area of the Liverpool City.
Geographically, Casula is the next suburb right after Liverpool’s Hume Highway and the main Southern Railways between Sydney and Melbourne. The land sits on a relatively high elevation which is around 30 to 79 metres above sea level, composed mostly of gently rolling land. There is the Georges River which acts as the suburb’s east boundary.
History
Casula was formerly occupied by the native aborigines who were called the – Tharawal or Darawal people of the greater Eora nation. They were the people who belonged to the Greater
South Western Sydney.
The European settlement started only on the 19th century. Among them was Richard Guise who had a farm which he called “Casula”- in which this suburb was named after. The area was used mostly for propagating poultry, market gardens and fruits.
During World War I – there was a large Australian Imperial Forces recruitment and training reserve that was based in Casula. One of Casula’s major residential streets was then named as the “Reserve Road” because of that fact. However around 1916 the military camp was known to have been notorious due to a large number of soldiers who protested and turned against the strict trainings. They actually marched to the closest Liverpool area and then looted several establishments and even hijacked some trains going to Sydney. Military Police was forced to shoot one of the rioters.
Then on 1918, a man named Walter Ingham Sr. bought 42 acres of bush land in Casula as an 18 year old gift to his beloved son. When he died on 1953 it was his sons Jack and Bob who took charge of managing their small chicken breeding operation which later on prospered to become the largest chicken producers in Australia.
Because it was a typical farm land, it took time before it was declared as a suburb on the late 1950s. Most of the large acreage in the central and southern regions were then subdivided and developed over the years.
Environment
It is where the famous Cumberland Plain Woodland is located, which unfortunately is now a part of the endangered ecological community.
There is also another park – Leacock Regional Park, the home of the endangered Cumberland Plain Land Snail.
Landmarks
There is the Casula Powerhouse, beside the railway station. It used to be a 1950s power station which was only reopened in 1994 that was made into an arts centre that caters to a multi cultural exhibition from artists of the Sydney’s South West Region. This new centre was again reopened on 5 April 2008 which already housed a 326 seat theater, some new exhibition spaces, and several artist studios and residencies facilities.
Demographics
Based on the 2006 census, Casula had a population of 13,202 which was mostly composed of families. The number of single-person households was only 15% while the number of couples with children was 57%. There is a high average numbers of Australian citizens and people born overseas with the most significant groups being those born in Fiji at 3.5%, Italy at 2.3% and Lebanon at 2.3%.
